My Don Omars

Bought some cheap sneaks on Ebay, for $19.99. I didn't know I had bought some "Don Omar" shoes... So know I have Reggaeton sneakers. I really never heard Don Omar... Music sounds like, well... reggaeton. Personally, I like the sneakers better.

Takin' It Back To The Summer...

DJ Shamann takes it back to the summer...

"I was feeling a little nostalgic so I took it back to some of my favourite summer club classics growing up. Played a little bit of Bell Biv Devoe, Notorious B.I.G., Naughty By Nature, Mary J Blige, Black Sheep, LL Cool J, SWV, INOJ and the list goes on.. the styles may have changed but good music is timeless."

African Rumba

I have always loved Soukous. This is literally the happiest music on the planet.

Here's the Wikipedia explanation of it.

Soukous (also known as Lingala or Congo, and previously as African rumba) is a musical genre that originated in the two neighbouring countries of Belgian Congo and French Congo during the 1930s and early 1940s, and which has gained popularity throughout Africa. "Soukous" (derived from the French word secouer, to shake, was originally the name of a dance popular in the Congos in the late 1960s, and danced to an African version of rumba. Although the genre was initially known as rumba (sometimes termed specifically as African rumba), the term "soukous" has come to refer to African rumba and its subsequent developments.

Soukous is called Congo music in West Africa, and Lingala in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania - referring to the Lingala language of the region from where it originated. In the 1980s and early 1990s, a fast-paced style of soukous known as kwassa kwassa – named after a popular dance, was popular. A style called ndombolo, also named after a dance, is currently popular.

I Know He Had Soul... Bobby Byrd RIP.

Bobby Byrd (August 15, 1934, Toccoa, Georgia – September 12, 2007, Loganville, Georgia) was an African American funk/soul/R&B/gospel musician and songwriter, best known as James Brown's longtime sideman and co-vocalist on songs such as Licking Stick - Licking Stick, Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine and Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved. Byrd also recorded many solo funk tracks, most famously I Know You Got Soul (1971), which have been sampled by musicians including Public Enemy, Eric B. & Rakim, Ice Cube, LL Cool J and A Tribe Called Quest. He was the original leader and founder of The Famous Flames, the vocal group with which James Brown first became famous. Byrd is actually the man who discovered James Brown.

On September 12th 2007, comforted by wife Vicki Anderson and a large, close family, Byrd died of cancer, he was 73.

Joe Zawinul dies at 75. RIP.

Jazz legend Joe Zawinul, who soared to fame as one of the creators of jazz fusion and performed and recorded with Miles Davis, died Tuesday in Vienna, Austria. He was 75.

Zawinul had been hospitalized since last month and suffered a rare form of skin cancer.

Zawinul won widespread acclaim for his keyboard work on chart-topping Davis albums such as "In A Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew," and was a leading force behind the jazz-rock fusion movement.

In 1970, Zawinul cofounded Weather Report with saxophonist and Davis alumnus Wayne Shorter.Their biggest commercial success came from his composition "Birdland", a 6-minute opus featured on Weather Report's 1977 album Heavy Weather, which peaked at number 30 on the Billboard pop albums chart.

Here's Zawinul performing Birdland with Weather Report.

Hit The Drum

I should like Tribal more than I do. I think I'm not crazy about most of it, because it doesn't sound raw enough to me. I like batucada and bhangra that's heavy on the dhol, cause that shit is hard hitting. Most tribal just sounds like some progressive house with some light drumming on top.

Anyway here's a pretty good tribal playlist I found on Imeem.

And a mix.

Drum and Bass, Commodore Amiga Style!

Boy 8 Bit makes a D&B mix from back in the day using a Commodore Amiga!

From his myspace blog;

"When I was a lickle yout I used to make Drum and Bass / Jungle records on my Amiga - 4 channels of 8-Bit samples using Octamed, a 'tracker' program (Ask your Dad). All of this was stored on Floppy disks, not even the high density ones you use on a pc. They held 800k.

Other fun things included 2 channels being panned hard left and 2 hard right. No Eq'ing or VST effects here. No effects at all. Except ones you could enter via Hex Codes!!

In fact this is where I got my name from, the fact I used 8 bit samples on my amiga, nerdy I know. Its stuck ever since. It suggests i'm part of the whole Nes, GB, C64 ting - which I love to bits, but isn't really what my music is 100 percent about i.e. I dont soley use a gameboy or something, more take influence from... erm.

Yes

Annnnyhow, here is a poorly put together 10min mega mix of my Greatest moments as a D&B Producer..."

Boompty House

I've been on a big Derrick Carter kick lately... I like him way more now, than I did before. His stuff is really funky, and he seems to have had a big influence over the whole Fidget House movement.

Here's Derrick doing his thing. He's here with his frequent partner Mark Farina, who I've always been a big fan of.
